Pembrokeshire locals wanted to help make a difference to those living with diabetes.

Orbis Education and Care is appealing to those with first-hand insight to get in touch.

A Pembrokeshire home for adults with autism is appealing for locals with first-hand experience of complex diabetes to get in touch.

Orbis Education and Care is keen to hear from anyone with insider knowledge of the condition, and who would be interested in helping the people it supports at one of its locations near Tenby by becoming a Support Worker there.

Orbis Education and Care is the largest independent provider of care and education services for those with a diagnosis of autism in Wales. It runs 17 schools, residential homes and facilities for children and adults with associated complex needs.

Zahra Conway, Chief People Officer at Orbis, said there was an opportunity for those already working in or interested in joining the care sector and who have background knowledge of diabetes to make a real difference in people’s lives by filling the vacancies available.

“To some extent, there is a shortage in carer experience around diabetes generally, but it is also something people can be quite intimidated or overwhelmed by if they don’t have a nursing background, or haven’t had personal experience of the condition either,” Zahra explained.

“We work hard to make the lives of the people we are here to support the very best they can be and making sure those within our care that have diabetes are supported with a true understanding and insight of what it means to be diabetic is important to us.”

“All of our colleagues are fully trained here at Orbis and are capable of supporting our learners and residents with a wide variety of issues across the board.” Zahra added.

“But we do feel that the lives of those within our care at our Rosendale site in Pembrokeshire, two of whom have diabetes, would be truly enhanced through the support of colleagues with a meaningful insight into what living with the condition really means.”

Located near the sea and with views of the rolling Pembrokeshire hills, Rosendale offers a calm, supportive and homely living environment for up to six adults with autism.

Orbis Education and Care is looking for people with or without formal training to work full-time with residents as Support Workers at Rosendale. Rates are £9.42 for entry-level or £9.92 for those looking to or have already achieved, All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF) for Social Care Wales and diabetes training, rising to £10.35 on completion of a Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 3 qualification.

Zahra said: “We see, on a daily basis, some truly heart-warming interactions that make us feel privileged to employ the many special people that we do, and we want to recognise and support those employees in a meaningful way wherever we can.”

“We really would urge anyone who may have first-hand experience of diabetes and the desire to make a real difference to the lives of others to get in touch.”
