Mission
At Dan y Coed our mission is to provide friendly and nurturing learning and living environments that inspire confidence and self-esteem, encouraging children to develop into independent, active and valued members of society as they become young people and adults.
By blending education with modern living and a therapeutic approach to care, children develop a positive self-image, learning how to make positive choices and maintain their health and wellbeing.
Learning that extends from school into the living environment serves to reinforce independence and life skills throughout the waking day, in education, in the home and in the community. For children at Dan y Coed, the world is one big classroom and an infinite source of both practical and inspirational learning opportunities.
Children at Dan y Coed have a voice and are listened to. They are encouraged to directly shape their own learning and living experiences.
History
Before it was a school and home for children with autism, Dan y Coed had been an outdoor pursuits and activity centre for many years. Purchased from Swansea Council in February 2017, Orbis completely re-designed and re-modelled the site, and the state-of-the-art school was first to open its doors in November 2017.
Work continued apace and in May 2019 we were joined by Swansea City FC legends and ambassadors Lee Trundle and Leon Britton, who officially unveiled our stunning interior-designed home.
Being located so close to the Gower, this means that we are able to take full advantage of the area’s beautiful natural surroundings to enhance the learning and extra-curricular experience. Many of our children love to be out in the open and what better playground than the miles of sandy beaches that curve around Swansea Bay.
The education and care teams combine with our creative in-house therapy specialists, including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Positive Behaviour Support practitioners. Many of our children both live and learn on the same site, thus benefitting greatly from our blended 24-hour waking curriculum of education and care.
Visiting Arrangements
Maintaining contact with families is of paramount importance and of course we welcome visits on a pre-arranged basis. Indeed, we ask that family visits are planned so that we can ensure that children are prepared for visits and possible changes to their routines.
After-School Curriculum
Our after-school curriculum is positively teeming with ideas and options. In fact, the range of options is almost as broad as the children’s interests.
With both the coast and the city on our doorstep we have a great number of museums, parks, walks, castles and beaches to choose from, all within a few miles of Dan y Coed. Swansea is a young city with a large student population. It is perfect for a day out spent shopping or taking in a film, going for a meal or watching a theatre performance or other live event including sporting fixtures.
Onsite activities include health and wellbeing events run by the therapies team. The Eco Forum may get together to discuss the environment, the school or home, or children may decide to hang out in the on-site play area with its swings and trampoline.
The home is also the perfect environment in which to practice life skills learned during the school day. Children are supported to learn tasks and personal care in the home, and can be provided with evening timetables and schedules, work schedules, signs and symbols to help them maintain their routine.
