Home Information

General

With our home located on the same site as the school, Ty Bronllys offers a wide range of learning and living options. Accommodation can be offered on a part-time or full time basis for up to 10 children. Currently all of our residents also attend school here.

Ty Bronllys is one of Orbis’ smaller homes, promoting a close family-feel, where staff and children alike can leave their coats and muddy wellies by the door. Spread over two floors, the main house is made up of a large lounge, kitchen and dining area, so plenty of communal space for spending time with friends, as well as individual bedrooms. Children are encouraged to get creative and put their personal stamp on their own space, bringing as much or as little from their home as they like.

Children are supported to socialise and meet lifelong friends in a safe and nurturing environment where children have access to a peer group, where they can learn, make mistakes, practice and ultimately succeed.

Located at the foot of the Brecon Beacons National Park with views of the mountains, children here can enjoy the outdoors with miles of country walks, with Bronllys village nearby and the friendly historic town of Brecon only a few miles away, with its shops and cafes.

Mission

At Ty Bronllys our mission is to provide friendly and nurturing learning and living environments that inspire confidence and self-esteem, encouraging children to develop into independent, active and valued members of society as they become young people and adults.

By blending education with modern living and a therapeutic approach to care, children develop a positive self-image, learning how to make positive choices and maintain their health and wellbeing.

Learning that extends from school into the living environment serves to reinforce independence and life skills throughout the waking day, in education, in the home and in the community. For children at Ty Bronllys, the world is one big classroom and an infinite source of both practical and inspirational learning opportunities.

Children at Ty Bronllys have a voice and are listened to. They are encouraged to directly shape their own learning and living experiences.

Ty Bronllys — Exploring the natural surroundings

History

Ty Bronllys was the very first Orbis service to open its doors, which it did in 2006.

It is flanked on all sides by spectacular surroundings, overlooking the Black Mountains, close to the village of Bronllys just 7 miles from Brecon. The home is built on the land of the former home of a doctor who worked at Bronllys Hospital. It is enclosed by hedgerows and includes several acres of fields, a wooded area, a play barn, park equipment and an allotment where children can develop a range of skills or simply enjoy being outdoors in the fresh air.

At the time Ty Bronllys opened it was recognised that very little specialist support existed for children with complex needs, and Ty Bronllys opened with the aim of providing education and care placements that are entirely bespoke, and that are designed around the child.

This was a departure from traditional models that expect children to learn entirely in a classroom environment, within set structures, in large classes and at the same pace as their peers. Equally, we have always emphasised that care is more effective when individuals are shown how to learn skills for themselves, as opposed to the traditional view that care is about doing things for people.

In 2006, the service opened with just one child but it quickly filled to capacity and is now comprised of a home for up to 10 children and a school for up to 15 pupils. Currently all of the children who live at Ty Bronllys also attend school, and we also have a number of children who attend in education only.

Visiting Arrangements

Maintaining contact with families is of paramount importance and of course we welcome visits on a pre-arranged basis. Indeed, we ask that family visits are planned so that we can ensure that children are prepared for visits and possible changes to their routines.

After-School Curriculum

Our after school curriculum is full of ideas and options. In fact, the range of options is almost as broad as the children’s interests.

We are located within the beautiful Powys countryside just a short distance from Bronllys village and the historic town of Brecon with its amenities, shops and a range of leisure options.

Onsite, we have a large swathe of fields and woodland in which to play as well as a huge play barn. The Eco Forum may get together to discuss the environment, the school or home, or children may decide to hang out at our indoor or outdoor play areas with its swings and trampoline.

The home is also the perfect environment in which to practice life skills learned during the school day. Children are supported to learn tasks and personal care in the home, and can be provided with evening timetables and schedules, work schedules, signs and symbols to help them maintain their routine.
